What to Expect When Getting Dentures or a Partial Denture

The idea of getting dentures or partial dentures can be daunting and sometimes even embarrassing. At Downtown Franklin Family Dentistry, we completely understand these concerns and are here to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible.

What Are Dentures and Partial Dentures?
Dentures are custom-made replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They come in two main types: complete dentures, which replace all of the teeth, and partial dentures, which fill in the gaps when only some of the teeth are missing. Both types of dentures help improve your ability to eat and speak and provide support for facial muscles, restoring your smile and confidence.

Partial dentures, unlike full dentures, are often attached to remaining natural teeth with clasps or precision attachments. They are typically chosen when you still have some healthy teeth in place, offering a more conservative and affordable solution than extracting and replacing all teeth with complete dentures.

Why Might You Need Dentures or Partial Dentures?
People often need dentures or partial dentures when they have lost teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or injury. Without replacing missing teeth, the surrounding teeth can shift, causing issues with your bite and jaw alignment. Dentures or partial dentures can help restore function and aesthetics while improving your overall oral health. Dr. Abrams will evaluate your specific situation and recommend the best option based on the number of missing teeth and your overall oral condition.

Initial Consultation

Your journey to a new smile begins with an initial consultation. During this visit, Dr. Abrams will evaluate your oral health and discuss your dental history. This helps us determine the best type of denture for your needs and ensures a perfect fit. We will also discuss your aesthetic preferences, such as the shade of your new teeth.

Scanning for Your Custom Denture

After your initial consultation, the team will take digital scans of your mouth to create a custom denture that fits comfortably and looks natural.

Fitting Appointments

You will then return to our office for an initial fitting appointment. During this visit, we will ensure that the trial denture fits properly and we will make any necessary adjustments. We will obtain the proper bite (or relationship between your upper and lower teeth) to secure a perfect fit. We will also pick the color or shade of your teeth.

You will then return for a “try-in” visit so we can see the denture set-up before it is processed. We will make any last minute changes before the lab constructs the denture.

At the final visit, we will deliver your new denture and make any necessary adjustments.

It’s essential that your denture feels comfortable and secure. We will also provide you with instructions on how to care for your new denture and maintain good oral hygiene.

Getting Used to Your Denture

It’s normal to experience some discomfort or difficulty speaking and eating when you first start wearing your denture. Your mouth needs time to adjust to the new appliance. Here are a few tips to help you during this transition period:

  • Start with soft foods: Begin by eating soft foods that are easy to chew. Gradually introduce more solid foods as you become more comfortable. If you have any sore spots in your mouth, call us immediately so we can adjust the areas on your denture.
  • Practice speaking: Reading aloud or speaking in front of a mirror can help you get used to speaking with your denture.
  • Use a denture adhesive: If your denture feels loose, a denture adhesive can provide additional stability. However, if the problem persists, visit our office for a possible reline (adding material to your denture).

Follow-Up Appointments

Regular follow-up appointments are crucial to ensure that your denture continues to fit well and function properly. Over time, the shape of your gums and jawbone may change, which can affect and loosen the fit of your denture. During these appointments, we can make any necessary adjustments or repairs to keep your denture in optimal condition.

Caring for Your Denture

Proper care and maintenance of your denture is essential to prolong their lifespan and keep your mouth healthy. Here are some tips:

  • Clean your denture daily: Remove your denture and brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and soft soap. Avoid using regular toothpaste, as it can be too harsh.
  • Soak your denture overnight: Keeping your denture in a denture-soaking solution overnight helps keep it moist and maintains its shape.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene: Even with a denture, it’s important to brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth twice daily to prevent plaque buildup and to maintain excellent oral health. Using floss or a Waterpik daily between your teeth is crucial as well.
