Who doesn’t love to play their favorite sport? Whether it’s just for fun or for a competitive league, sports allow you to be active and develop fundamental skills in your life. Many sports, however, can pose a threat to your teeth. It’s always important to take care of your teeth, but it’s especially necessary when you (or your child) play a sport. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for an athlete’s teeth.
One of the best things you can do for your teeth, as an athlete, is wear a mouthguard. If you or your child play a sport where hard contact and collisions frequently occur, it is especially important to wear a mouthguard. According to the American Dental Association, mouthguard help buffer an impact or blow that otherwise could cause broken teeth, jaw injuries, or cuts to the lip, tongue, or face. That means that it protects not only your teeth but your entire oral cavity from injuries. A mouthguard can help protect your teeth from chips, cracks, or breaks in the event of a collision. Be sure to wear this device during all games and practices.
Not only does a healthy diet fuel your athletic pursuits, but it’s also important for your oral health. The American Dental Association says that the foods you choose and how often you eat them can affect your general health and the health of your teeth and gums too. Go easy on the processed foods and sugary sports drinks. Instead, try to add as many fresh and healthy foods into your diet as possible.
This is always a good rule of thumb, even if you aren’t an athlete. Make sure to brush your teeth in the morning and before bed and to floss daily. This will remove any leftover food particles and acid from your teeth. We also suggest that you use a toothpaste with fluoride for an added level of protection. Most importantly, don’t skip your routine dental checkups! Dr. Abrams can make sure that your teeth and gums are in good shape.
Follow these tips to ensure that an athlete’s teeth stay in good shape. If you would like to go the extra mile for you or your favorite athlete’s teeth, schedule an appointment!
